KOLKATA: For the better part of his 16-year-old career, Shahbaz Nadeem has diligently shouldered the responsibility of leading the Jharkhand bowling attack in domestic cricket with a lot of success.

Currently confined to his home, at Jhariya, Dhanbad, owing to the country-wide lockdown, the left-arm spinner is showing similar diligence in helping those in need. He has decided to look after 350 families in the area, donating rice, cereals, vegetables and sugar.

“Till now we’ve been able to distribute these things among 150 families, there are 200 more to go,” said Nadeem.

The 30 year-old, who made his Test debut last year against the visiting South Africans at JSCA International Cricket Stadium in Ranchi, said that his family has been busy packing the things.

“I believe in providing direct aid, so from the morning we’re mainly busy preparing packets so that we can help as many people as possible,” Nadeem explained.

With uncertainly looming large over the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Sunrisers Hyderabad spinner is sweating out it out in the gym at home, trying to remain fit for the season once it gets underway. “Right now the priority should be everyone’s safety and health. Whether it is today or tomorrow, IPL will be back but right now it’s human lives which are at stake. For me there is no other option other than working out at home. Any player would love to be on the field but one has to accept the situation,” said Nadeem.

“The gym sessions are helping me. Whenever the season starts, be it the IPL or any other form of the game, I’m good enough to hit the ground running,” he remarked.
