Joe Biden was formally recognised by Congress as the next US president early Thursday (Jan 7), ending two months of failed challenges by his predecessor, Donald Trump. The conclusion of the joint session followed violent incidents at the US Capitol, when Trump supporters stormed the building in a bid to stop proceedings.
In a statement, Mr Trump promised an orderly transition of power on Inauguration Day, despite maintaining that he disagrees with the election outcome.
