Jammu: The historic City Chowk, the commercial hub in old Jammu, was renamed as ‘Bharat Mata Chowk’ following the passage of a resolution by the general house of the BJP-led Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), officials said on Sunday.

The renaming of the chowk drew mixed reactions from the people with most of them welcoming the decision but urged the JMC to focus more on development and cleanliness rather than changing names.

“I had moved a resolution in the general house some four months ago demanding renaming of the ‘City Chowk’ to ‘Bharat Mata Chowk on the popular demand of the public,” senior BJP leader and Deputy Mayor of the JMC Purnima Sharma told PTI.

She said the resolution was adopted and accordingly the City Chowk was renamed as ‘Bharat Mata Chowk’.

“This place is historic and a witness to major decisions and protests in the past. Every year people are hoisting the tricolour on Republic and Independence days in this chowk. There was a popular demand from the public to rename this chowk as Bharat Mata Chowk,” Sharma said.

The starting point of the circular road near Panjtirthi in the city was named by the JMC as ‘Atal Chowk’ in the memory of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the JMC polls winning 43 of the 75 wards after the Urban local bodies elections were held in the erstwhile state in four phases from October 8 to 16 in 2018 after a gap of 13 years.

A board with the new name was seen erected by the JMC in the chowk, which connects four busy markets, including the famous Raghunath Temple, Super Market, Shalimar and Kanak Mandi.

“We welcome the move and understand that the respect for the motherland should be in one’s heart. The administration should focus on the creation of more parking space in the market and attracting tourists to Jammu, which has lost its charm after the city was bypassed with the direct rail link to the famous Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine at Katra,” a local resident said.

Joint Secretary of Kanak Mandi market association V Gupta, however, was not impressed by the new name of the chowk and said It should not have done because this is the oldest residential and business area of the city.

“They placed the board overnight without consulting the locals. This is the oldest residential and commercial area of the city and known by the name of City Chowk. It came as a big surprise for us,” Gupta said.

Raman Sharma, another shopkeeper, said the market is faced with lack of enough parking space as the customers are avoiding the market.

“We have no issue with the changed name but there should be a focus on addressing the problems being faced by the shopkeepers and residents,” he said.

A sinister campaign was launched by two Islamic organizations in 2019 in the USA which led to hearings and resolutions on Kashmir in the US Congress. After the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and Helping Hands for Relief and Development (HHRD) launched a campaign in the US to discredit India around the world. ICNA and HHRD are affiliated to Jammu and Kashmir unit of Jamaat–e-Islami which was banned by Indian government in 2019 on the grounds that it had relations with terror group Hizbul Mujahideen which has killed thousands of innocent civilians in past.

Document accessed by Zee News clearly establishes  a major plot to discredit India at international level on Kashmir issue. Both ICNA and HHRD along with other Islamic groups ran an anti-India campaign under the banner ‘Stand with Kashmir’ and organized a protest in front of consulate General of India in New York and Los Angeles. These groups also campaigned to replace their social media profile with pictures of red dots to show solidarity on Kashmir.

‘’On August 16th, the US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), a lobbying umbrella group of islamist organizations, held a D.C. rally for Kashmir in front of the Indian embassy. The rally was cosponsored by ICNA and MAS, along with the extremist mosque Dar al-Hijrah  and the Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC). WikiLeaks emails revealed that TASC coordinates closely with regime figures from the authoritarian Turkish government.’’ Said Oren Litwin is his article ‘Islamists are Exploiting The Conflict in Kashmir’ published at The Daily Wire.

Islamist originations mainly funded by Pakistan have become very powerful in the US in recent months. Last year in the month of October-November hearing by US Congress reflected the strong presence of these groups in the US,  A convention of more than 25,000 Muslims from the United States and Canada was held in Chicago in December 2019 under the banner of ICNA ,which debated a session on Bangladesh & Kashmir: Democracy, Human Rights and Religious Freedom.

”ICNA is  openly affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami.The Jamaat-e-Islami is a South Asian Sunni revivalist movement that has provided an ideological platform and recruiting base for the US designated  U.S. terrorist group Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), which has perpetrated  several terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. ICNA, based in Queens, N.Y., strongly advocates for Kashmiri self-determination, and its conventions feature high-profile U.S.-based Kashmiri separatist leaders and activists. The conventions excoriates India for “state-sponsored terrorism in Kashmir.” Said Abha Shankar in his article American Islamist’s Double Standards on Kashmir.

As per some reports, President of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) Sardar Masood Khan soon after, urged “Muslim across the world to stand united” and “relieve Muslim Ummah of agonies” and asked ICNA and United States Coalition of Muslim Organisations (USCMO) to engage “lawmakers in encouraging hearings on Kashmir in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and initiate debates on Kashmir in the Congress.”

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Jamaat-e-Islami is the main organization responsible for propagation of separatist and radical ideology in Kashmir valley. A sizeable section of cadres of the group overtly worked for terrorist orgazations especially Hizbul. Its cadres are actively involved in subversive activities of HM by providing hideouts ,ferrying arms.

An Indian Home Ministry note accessed by Zee News suggest JeI is responsible for formation of Hizbul, the biggest terrorist organization active in Jammu and Kashmir. The roup under its pro secessionist and pro-Pakistan agenda has been providing ideological and logistical support to separatist and terrorist elements in Kashmir for anti-national activities. JeI was founded by Maulana Maududi in 1941.

Surprisingly,American Islamist group remained silent on Pakistan’s involvement in several terror attacks in Kashmir.

Just a day after getting released from detention after nearly eight months, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday (march 25) appealed the BJP-led government at the Centre to release PDP chief and another former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, and other politicians from detention after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown on Tuesday.

“It’s callous and cruel to continue to detain Mehbooba Mufti and others at a time like this. There was never much justification to detain everyone in the first place and none at all to keep them detained as the country enters a three-week lockdown. I hope Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release them,” tweeted Omar Abdullah.

It’s callous & cruel to continue to detain @MehboobaMufti & others at a time like this. There was never much justification to detain everyone in the 1st place & none at all to keep them detained as the country enters a 3 week lockdown.I hope @PMOIndia & @HMOIndia will release them

— Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) March 25, 2020

It may be recalled that Omar Abdullah was detained on August 5, 2019, along with his father Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and several other politicians after the Centre abrogated Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On Tuesday, when it was announced that Abdullah will be released from the detention centre Hari Niwas in Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti had tweeted: “Glad he will be released. For all their talk of nari Shakti & women emancipation, seems like this regime fears women the most.”

Talking to media after arriving at his Hari Niwas residence at Gupkar Road in Srinagar after the Jammu and Kashmir administration revoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) order against him, the National Conference leader said that he would talk about Article 370 and its impact in the region in detail after some time.

“Today, I, realise that we are fighting a war of life and death. All our people who have been detained should be released at this time. We must follow govt orders to fight Coronavirus,” said the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister.
