Ontario Provincial Police cruiser. Postmedia News A driver from Merrickville-Wolford township who used a cellphone while driving, then posted a video of it on Instagram, is facing charges.

Ontario Provincial Police at Grenville laid the charges Tuesday after receiving a complaint. The driver’s one-year-old daughter was in the vehicle at the time the video was recorded.

In Ontario, it’s illegal to use a hand-held device while driving, including when stopped at a red light.

Other actions such as eating, drinking, grooming, smoking, reading and reaching for objects are not part of the province’s distracted driving law, but such drivers could still be charged with careless or dangerous driving.

On first conviction, a charge of distracted driving leads to a fine of $615 if settled out of court and up to $1,000 if a summons is received or the ticket is fought in court and the driver loses.
