As part of Netflix’s latest earnings call this week, the streaming giant’s various executives have hinted about a bigger move into gaming as they actively expand licensing and merchandising of their original series and films.
Greg Peters, COO and Chief Product Officer reportedly talked, with a smile, about the billion-dollar video game business and says Netflix is trying to: “figure out all of the different ways that we can increase those points of connection and deepen that fandom and certainly games is a really interesting component of that.”
He goes on to say: “we’ve actually launched games themselves as part of our licensing and merchandising effort and we’re happy with what we’ve seen. There’s no doubt that games are going to be an important form of entertainment and important modality to deepen that fan experience so we’re going to keep going.”
Netflix has dabbled in video gaming with games based on their shows like “Stranger Things”. However, even if they do expand, there’s zero intention of making it a primary source of income: ” I wouldn’t look for any large secondary pool of profits.”

Paul Verhoeven’s iconic 1992 erotic thriller “Basic Instinct” is coming back to the big screen with a new 4K restoration commissioned by Studiocanal.
Restored through 2019 and 2020 from the original 35mm negative and supervised by Verhoeven himself, this is the full-length version of the film and not the U.S. theatrical cut which trimmed some of the film’s most erotic scenes.
The restoration will be released in multiple territories starting with France on June 16th and Australia and New Zealand on June 17th with a U.S. rollout through Rialto Pictures to follow.
Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, DVD and Steelbook editions will also be out in the U.K. on June 14th, Germany on June 17th, Australia on July 7th, and New Zealand on July 14th.
Studiocanal has also delivered a one-off documentary, “Basic Instinct, Sex, Death & Stone,” which premiered on French TV in December and is being sold globally to broadcasters.
It includes exclusive interviews and personal anecdotes captured in 2019 and 2020 with Verhoeven, Stone, Douglas, editor Frank J. Urioste, writer Joe Eszterhas and cinematographer Jan de Bont. It will be a special bonus feature on the home entertainment release.
